Body doubling: what the research actually says
Body doubling is working alongside another person — not with them, just near them — because their presence makes it easier to start and easier to stay. If you focus fine in a library but drift at home alone, you already know the effect. This page summarizes what has actually been studied, so you don't have to take a focus app's word for it (including ours).
The 2024 ACM study: what body doubling is, and that it works
A 2024 study published by the ACM (Bodydoubling as a tool) surveyed and interviewed 220 mostly neurodivergent adults about their use of body doubling. It's the first serious academic mapping of the practice: participants described using another person's quiet presence — in person or over video — to start tasks they had been avoiding, to stay with boring work, and to end sessions with less shame. The consistent finding is that quiet co-presence improves focus for many people: not instruction, not accountability contracts — presence.
Worth noting honestly: it's survey-and-interview research about people who already practice body doubling, not a controlled trial. It tells us the effect is real and widely used; it doesn't measure its size.
The 2025 study: an AI body double compared with a human one
A 2025 lab study (arXiv 2509.12153) put participants through tedious tasks alone, beside a human body double, and beside an AI companion presented on a screen. Tasks were completed roughly 27–30% faster with a body double than alone — and the AI body double produced benefits comparable to the human one.
The honest caveats, before anyone gets excited: twelve participants, one lab, short tasks, early days. It's a promising first data point, not a settled result. If you want the fuller picture, read the paper — it's short.
What this adds up to
- Presence helps many people focus. This is well-documented practice, now with early academic backing.
- The presence doesn't have to instruct, monitor, or even talk much. The quietness is part of the mechanism.
- Early evidence suggests the presence may not need to be human — which matters if the human part (cameras, strangers, scheduling) is exactly what stops you.
What we don't claim: that any of this treats any condition, or that an app replaces human connection. The claim the research supports is narrower and better: quiet co-presence improves focus, and there's more than one way to get quiet co-presence.
