Why camera-on body doubling doesn't work for everyone

Here is a thing that took me embarrassingly long to admit: presence helps me focus, and being watched destroys it. Both are true at once, and the standard advice never had a slot for that combination.

I'd book a matched video session and then dread it more than the task. Not because anything bad happens in them — the people are lovely — but because for the whole session a part of my attention stands guard: how do I look, am I working enough, did they see me check my phone. The presence that was supposed to hold my focus was spending it.

The overlooked group

The research on body doubling is clear that quiet co-presence helps many people work. But every mainstream way to get it assumes the camera is a feature: matched sessions require it, co-working rooms reward it, accountability culture celebrates it. If you're the person who joins the Discord room and never turns the camera on — you're not failing at body doubling. You're in the group the format forgot: people for whom the witness is the cost.

Some markers, if this is you: you work better in cafés where nobody knows you than on calls where somebody does. You've felt relief when a video session got cancelled — for a session you booked yourself. "Camera optional" still reads as camera guilt.

What actually works for us

The camera-free versions of presence: a study-with-me video, a cam-off room where check-ins are typed, a person in the house working in the same room — or, more recently, an AI body double: presence that literally cannot judge you, because there is no one behind it to impress.

That last one is what I ended up building, because I couldn't find it: a small companion you talk to for a few minutes in the morning, who then works quietly beside your timer. It works beside you, not over your shoulder. I am not neutral about it — it's my app — but the reason it exists is this essay, in reverse.

If presence helps you and being watched doesn't, nothing is wrong with you. Get the presence, skip the witness. Every option for doing that is compared here.
